Yacht-lined harbors, quaint cobbled streets and rich cuisine; the South of France certainly has a lot to offer for a traveler.  It’s unparalleled beauty had my jaw dropped at every town and my camera endlessly clicking. It was a photographers dream destination. Some of the stops to these cities were done while on the Portraits of Southern France Viking River Cruise and others we visiting while on a road trip (where I drove a very cool black Citroën) from Lyon to Nice.

Lyon

As Florence is to Rome, Lyon is to Paris — a slightly smaller, yet charming version of its larger counterpart. For me, it was a city I wish I could have spent more time exploring, photographing and eating in.

Les Baux

Les Baux-de-Provence is a picturesque city that has been labeled as one of the most beautiful villages in France. This stone fortress will impress with architectural treasures, quaint shops and stunning look-out points.

Perouges

Perouges is a medieval walled town located northeast of Lyon. It is perched on a small hill that overlooking the Rhône plain.

Arles

It was hard not to be enchanted by the narrow and winding streets of Arles. Another stop with Viking River Cruises where the Roman and Romanesque Monuments are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Avignon

Set on the Rhone river, Avignon is known as the city of popes. It is home to the UNESCO Palais des Papes, a historical medieval palace.

Marseille

Marseille is the second most populated city of France and the harbor is absolutely stunning with its overflow of beautiful boats.

Saint Remy

Nestled in the hills of Les Alpilles, in the heart of Provence, you’ll find the charming village of Saint Rémy. It is known as the “must see” city in the South of France and for good reason. It is truly charming with its inviting bistros, shuttered windows and tunnel of trees.

Tournon

This quaint commune in the Ardèche department in southern France was another amazing stop with Viking River Cruises. It is a lovely place to use as a base for exploring the nearby wine region.
