Try The Count of Monte Cristo to compare to 50 Shades. ;)

I have to wholeheartedly disagree. Ahab is perhaps the most fascinating character of all classic literature. It takes more than a cursory read to understand this book but if you take the time to understand what you are reading it is well worth the investment.

Victor Hugo was French and these novels were originally written in the French language

I’m glad that I finished it, one of the best endings of any book.

I have no problem with your list – they are all worthy. But after seeing Moby Dick on virtually every list, I must finally comment that Moby Dick is perhaps the most boring book I’ve ever read. It didn’t even occur to me that War and Peace is over twice as long, and Les Miserables, which I read in high school is longer yet. They were both far more interesting. Nuf said.

In addition, I think it’s good to reread Jane Eyre after reading Jean Rhys Wild Sargossa Sea.

First, how in the World can you list Tom Sawyer and not Huckleberry Finn, which is widely considered one of if not The Greatest American novel?!? Also, you give a brief summary of the plot of Dracula (which I datesay pretty much everyone already knows), yet you give not even one sentence about why the modern reader should peruse this admittedly dated classic (same applies to Wuthering Heights).

One more nitpic: How could you omit the immortal Victor Hugo from this list? Both Les Miserables and the Hunchback of Notre Dame rank high among all collections of classic English literature.
